In praise of the Porcelain Goddess: the catalogue...

I've always been jealous of Sir Thomas Crapper. Not on account of his wealth, success or title, but because his name has become a household word for the place where we relieve ourselves of bodily waste - such an essential part of our daily lives!

The Thomas Crapper logoApart from crapper, there are many more words for the place of ablution and its main receptacle, like toilet, porcelain goddess, loo, wc, shouse, outhouse, thunderbox, and many more that have no place on a decent website like this (grin)! Some names and euphemisms are national, leading to amusing culture clashes when American visitors ask their European host for the "bathroom", and are subsequently directed to a chamber with a tub, a shower and a washing basin... but not a throne or bowl in sight! And how about Australian expatriates in the States, urgently inquiring after the "dyke"? Oh, those fine intricacies of the English language!

Althought there's definitely something inherently funny about bodily functions, we shouldn't forget that modern toilets and related equipment are serious things: it's for a large part thanks to them that, in our Western "First World", epidemics like cholera and typhus have disappeared. The humble crapper and its connected plumbing are often objects of derision, while in fact they deserve praise! Hence the title of this website: "In praise of the Porcelain Goddess".

And now just a little bit about ourselves...

Trust the Porcelain Goddess! Finally: never trust a business that doesn't supply clear evidence of its whereabouts and physical existence. Although the thingy to the right is called "Seal of Integrity", it doesn't really vouch for our character which probably is just as well (grin!), but it sure supplies some solid information about who, and where, we are. This information is also available on our Privacy Policy page.

You should know at least some toilet names!

It's really astonishing, the number of names that our dear Porcelain Goddess has been given during the ages! One can go to the toilet in order to drop some stuff in the toilet bowl, but one can also do this on a chamber pot, afterwards washing the tender parts on a bidet. Of course visiting the loo or bog is an option, not to mention the well-known going to the bathroom, also said the john AKA the shitter. And what about doing what you need to do in the dunny, the restroom of the shithouse? Of course one can have a nice crap on the crapper, or do the same in the lavatory or even, in more primitive areas, in the outhouse. In Europe one often goes to the wc, while in various countries a visit to the can, the pisser or even a public toilet is among the possibilities. The options to relieve ones innards are truly uncountable!
